I fell in love with photography when Santa brought me a Kodak Fiesta camera in 1962. I was six. It has been hobby, avocation, vocation and voice at various stages. Out of high school, I started my photography and freelance writing business. In 1987, I had to move to greener (salary) pastures, but freelanced and taught photography on the side. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching at Houston Center for Photography, College of the Mainland (noncredit program), Jung Center—Houston, and ArtCamp (University of Plzen, Czech Republic). I’ve conducted individual and group portfolio reviews and have presented at Northwest Photo Club (Houston), Houston Photography Study Group, Houston Photochrome, Houston Camera Club and Woodlands Photo Club. I’ve published a few photography books, all with the hope of helping others fall in love with photography like I did oh-so-many-years ago. Listed below are several of the various presentations/workshops that I have created and delivered over the years, beginning with the message that I hope to take to as many people as possible…a guide to seeing.
The Seeing, Not the Taking
Based on my book of the same name. Anyone can take a picture…push a button. The question is “What do you see?’ and then, how to use your skills and the camera’s functions to hopefully show to others what you saw. Learn how! No matter your skill level, this is a guide to seeing for all photographers. Available live or virtual.
Art Removes Borders
I traveled out of the United States for the first time in my life to teach photography for a week during the summer at ArtCamp in Plzen, Czech Republic. This presentation of my work and that of my students reveals that art removes borders and that the feelings that images inspire transcend boundaries. Available live or virtual.
Becoming a Photographer
Do you want to transition from a picture taker, creating visual records of what is in front of you, to a light drawer (photo-grapher) who uses light to craft images that become part of your voice. This three-part session will guide the way. Available live or virtual.
Images that Speak
Is photography part of your voice, of how you share with others? Learn how to create images that speak by understanding what you want to say and how to create images that help you say it. Available live or virtual.
(im)Perfect Beauty
Find the beauty, forget the Photoshop. Beauty surrounds us and inspires us. Why is there a sense that we need to perfect (“fix”) it. Learn to see beauty for what it is in all types of subject matter…perfectly imperfect. Available live or virtual.
Improving Your Vision with Projects
By returning to particular subjects/inspirations in a way that develops a project or body of work, you can enhance your vision, expand your capabilities, enhance your insights, and, ultimately, better convey your message. Learn how to develop a body of work and the benefits of doing so. Available live or vitual.
Painting with Light
In this era of repeatability and consistency in image making, step into the beautifully unrepeatable world of image creation by painting with light. Whatever your favorite subject matter, there is a role for painting with light. Learn to use a variety of different light sources, techniques for lighting and much more. Available only live.
The Playground of Creativity
Photography is likely not your only creative outlet. Learn how to tap into your creative potential in outlets of your choosing by following the analogy of creative expression to a playground. This three-session program can be presented live or virtual.
Words and Images
People are symbolic communicators: use a word and an image comes to mind, see an image and words come to mind. Learn how to improve your photography by understanding and utilizing the bridge between words and images. Available live or virtual.
WYSIWYG
The term “what you see is what you get” began during the early days of desktop publishing in the 1980s. Is the same true for photography? Is what you see through the viewfinder what you get in your final images? Yes. And no. Learn how to cope with this reality when creating images. Available live or virtual.
